The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole
You know how when you make pancakes, sometimes you have to throw the first one out because it's a dud?
Well, let me introduce you to The Castle of Otronto, the Gothic literary movement's first pancake:
I thought it was rather a ridiculous mess. At least it was a short one. Like this review.

I think I read this book maybe ten years ago but I do not recall any of it so I guess it did not make much of an impression on me either
ReplyDeleteLOL! nice analogy
ReplyDeleteThat was such an awesome review! Sometimes you just have to say it. My gothic read was not so bad as this. Quite exciting (eventually)!
ReplyDeleteYep, I concur! :D
ReplyDeletePS - Disqus makes me log in with my Tumblr account, sigh. So this will lead there, rather than to my actual blog...actually, it won't even lead there. It just has my name. I can't figure out how to fix that. Ah well.
lol. perfect review. I didn't read this. In fact, I couldn't bring myself to join the Circuit (yes, my own Circuit) for any of the books. Because they all sounded like such first pancakes...
ReplyDeleteHappy Readathon!?! Cheers
ReplyDelete(love short posts, sorry this book was a mess)
Waffles are better than pancakes anyway :)
ReplyDeleteShannon,
ReplyDeleteThanks, the book really just lent itself to the analogy, lol!
Sorry about the Disqus glitches. All in all I have loved being able to respond to individual comments, but all the other aspects are mysteries to me. I know where to find you though!
ReplyDeleteI have your review open in a tab and still haven't commented on it, but you've given me courage to read Mysteries of Udolpho. I'm glad to hear it got exciting.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering whether I'm really a Gothic girl myself. I need to try a couple more before I decide, I think. As host, you have every right to decline to participate ;)
ReplyDeleteCare,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cheer!
Hmm, I've had this for awhile. Maybe I'll put it on the backburner.
ReplyDeleteLove this! Some books just don't warrant a discussion. I'll happily avoid this one per your post.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read very much in the way of the early Gothics, but what I have does seem to tend towards "ridiculous mess"--but fun, in an over-the-top sort of way. I wonder what I would make of this one....
ReplyDeleteHaha, my thoughts exactly! I read and reviewed this as well and was wondering if it was *supposed* to be a comedy?
ReplyDeleteI do not recall any of it so I guess it did not make much of an impression on me either
ReplyDeleteRevitaDerm
I suck at making pancakes--but that does happen when I make waffles. Seems the first batch is always a tosser.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, like the review. ;)
