Happy Birthday, Mr. Dickens!

I love this picture, but it reminds me how much a hate beards.  Yuck!

My children got me a beautiful biography of Dickens for my birthday.  I'm hoping to read a little bit of it today to celebrate.  Or at least look at some of the pictures.  It's supposed to rain today.  Perfect!

Books I've read by Dickens:  David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Oliver Twist
Dickens on my shelf:  Pickwick Papers, Our Mutual Friend
Favorites:  David Copperfield and Great Expectations
Books I want to read:  All of them!
Screen Adaptations I've seen:  David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver Twist
Favorite:  David Copperfield (1999).  Bleak House and Little Dorrit are close behind.

  1. Dickens is absolutely one of my favorite authors. I also have David Copperfield and Great Expectations near the top, but I would also add Bleak House. I'm hoping to reread a Tale of Two Cities again this year because I was underwhelmed after my first go. Maybe the second time will be the charm....

I love that edition in the picture!

  2. We have the same favorites of Dickens. That illustrated biography looks great. How wonderful that your kids got it for you.

Rainy weather is the perfect time to read. Luckily here in Scotland we have so many rainy days that it gives me plenty of excuses to hide out and read.

Oh, and I hate beards too. So gross!

  3. Great Expectations is my least favorite because we analyzed all the fun out of it in freshman English class. After that year, I think A Tale of Two Cities would be my favorite by Dickens.

  4. You know, now that I've said that I hate beards I'm thinking of exceptions--like Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings movies. So I guess they're not all bad, but, yes, Dickens' is pretty bad!

  5. I'm not sure why I didn't absolutely love Bleak House. I think it might be because I had heard it was his very best, and so I was expecting something that transcended my other favorites. Darn expectations!

  6. I'm glad you did a post too! It's always good to celebrate Dickens since there are so many haters out there. We have to balance it out, lol!

  7. Oliver Twist is actually my least favorite of the ones I've read, so maybe you shouldn't rush! I did love A Tale of Two Cities, and have actually read it twice. The last quarter of the book is one of the most powerful things I've read. I can see why it is your fave.
So funny about the HP books! I remember when I was younger and reading novels, I had a relative who would get me these picture books way below my reading level, and I just couldn't figure out what they were thinking! (Not that HP is low-level reading--love them, but it just reminded me of that.)

  8. I hope you get to David Copperfield someday. It's just such a good sentimental story that I can't resist! My children are awesome! I'm still getting used to them actually thinking of my birthday and spending their own money on me. It makes me cry and then they think I'm weird...

  9. Rain is perfect for reading, but I was so sad--the day I posted this it only ended up sprinkling a little bit. I need to move to Scotland!
The funny thing about beards is that my dad has always had one. I love my Dad, but not beards. His did not look as mangy as Dickens' in this picture though!

  12. Love this post! Great Expectations is my favorite Dickens, too, but I haven't read David Copperfield yet. That Dickens bio is on my wish list... what thoughtful children you have.

  13. To my shame I have to admit that I haven't read Oliver Twist yet, but nonetheless I am an ardent Dickens fan! I love Great Expectations too (I think every ambitious young person should read it), but A Tale of Two Cities is even better in my opinion, although it made me cry my eyes out...
I wish someone would get me a Dickens biography, but no, the only books I ever get are hundreds of different copies of Harry Potter (nothing against dear Harry, but Harry Potter seems to be the only book for teenagers my relatives know).
